Hundreds celebrate treasured teen's life at Baypark
About 1500 people turned out at Baypark to farewell Tauranga teen Samantha Mouat,
who died in a speedway crash at the weekend.
Samantha Mouat made her final lap of Baypark Stadium yesterday as the Tauranga teen was
farewelled by about 1500 people at her funeral. With orange ribbon around their wrists, in their
hair and pinned to their shirts, family and friends came to farewell the ministock driver. The 15-year-old's
casket was painted to match her beloved car, bright orange with her racing number "66m", and adorned
with photographs, orange flowers and ribbons.
Mourners dressed in black also wore splashes of orange - shirts, ties, and ribbons - as a tribute to
Sam's love for minicars and life. Sam was killed in a speedway crash in Kaikohe on Saturday.
Her family remembered a girl described as "the light in the dark", and wore black T-shirts adorned with Sam's
racing sponsors. The crowd was eerily silent as Sam's casket made its final lap of Baypark, towed by a stock car.
Following behind in Sam's orange car was her father, Michael Mouat, while boyfriend Sam Pitman drove another Mini stock.
